First, a quick explanation of the name of this blog, The Drunken Republican. Despite the rather unflattering picture that surely paints, it simply refers to the fact that some of the most fun and spirited political discussions I have had just happened to have occurred while sitting at some bar with friends of both political persuasions. The clarity of political thought that happens after a few IPA’s is amazing. Of course, the very moment that a debate morphs into anything resembling an argument, it’s time to call it a night, or at least change the subject.
As for me…I’ve simply been a news and political junkie for many years. So much so, that I felt as though I needed some sort of an outlet for my political thoughts and opinions reflecting the Republican viewpoint. Several years ago, I started writing letters to the editor to the local newspaper (a relatively large media market) where I had a published rate of about two-thirds. However, due to the limited nature of this, as well as the constant editing out of some of my best snarky and politically incorrect comments, my itch remained mostly unscratched…until now.
The contentious Bush/Gore presidential election of 2000 was probably the epicenter of my passion for debating politics. As time went on, I became very aware of how (social issues aside), the various policy positions of the Left and the Democratic party were pretty consistently based more on ideology, emotion, and guilt rather than fact, logic and history. Just as important is the extreme Left Wing media bias that exists in this country (with apologies to Fox News and The Wall Street Journal). The denial of this reality by those in the media and on the Left both amuses the hell out of me and insults my intelligence at the same time.
So now you sort of know where I’m coming from. Terms like political correctness, safe spaces, and microaggressions absolutely make my head want to explode. While I would love for lots of people to read my blog, it’s creation is mostly for therapeutic purposes as they relate to my own mental well being. And what better time to start than in the homestretch of the Trump/Clinton insult war…Don Rickles is sitting somewhere with a big grin on his face.
